Explained: Acronyms
What are we saying?
We use acronyms a lot! All clients receive total transparency on what we are doing for them. We use Trello—a collaborative workspace where ideas, lists—and everything we do is transparent and accessible. On this board, you will see a lot of acronyms! This will be a continued series in our blog with bitesize info so you can begin learning how the online ecosystem works.
So, what are we saying? Here is a glossary of the terms we use the most:
CMS – Content Management System. I have always called the CMS the house for your website. Think of the Domain Name System as the deed to your home and the CMS as the house itself. This is the software that allows you to edit your website easily. This can either be purchased, utilized through a free service, or be custom-coded by software engineers.
DNS – Domain Name System. This is like a phone book for the internet. DNS utilizes strings of numbers known as the IP address, so you do not have to know the exact number for each website. It’s like clicking on a name on your phone versus typing in the number.
EMP – Email Marketing Platform. Some refer to this as an email management platform. This is simply a platform that you use to send out emails to your subscribers. There are hundreds of these types of systems available.
GA – Google Analytics. A free analytics software that helps you to understand how users interact with your website.
SEM – Search Engine Marketing. A form of paid advertising for higher ranking on search engines.
SEO – Search Engine Optimization. A set of ongoing best practices to use on websites to help you get found online through search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, etc.).
SERP – Search Engine Results Pages. When you search for something on a search engine, you are seeing the SERP!
